Kate Harris here—“here” being Istanbul—where I’m about to start a year-long cycling expedition along the full length of the Silk Road.

I’m effectively filling in the gaps of the Silk Road I left unridden on my 2006 Morehead Travel-Study summer, namely that rather vast stretch between Europe and Asia.

Only this time the trip is a field research expedition exploring and advocating for wilderness conservation across borders, a continuation of what I wrote my thesis on at Oxford.
