For nearly an hour, we all sat squeezed into one two-person seat—an elite academic, a Hindi literature major from a lower-middle class Bengali background, his uneducated pilgrim father, and an interested foreigner.

The conversation drifted naturally from Hindi to English and back again (a kind of favor to me; all the others spoke Bengali as their mother tongue).

Philosophies of literature and politics and religion were rooted in stories of sadhus and saints, poets and mystics. I mostly listened.
