Blog post from Kathmandu, Nepal

Such is Kathmandu. On the surface, it screams with all the elements that make Asian societies daunting to Westerners: inundating crowds, strange customs (cows can cross any road any time and old men come running to offer tikka), dangerous traffic patterns, and poverty.

But there is a grace about the daily pulse.

But just beneath that surface in Kathmandu there exists a certain comfort. I realized very soon after arriving that Nepali culture celebrates friendliness, and foreigners are seen as opportunities of curiosity, not manipulation. The chaos doesn’t really dissipate. I came to know constant horns as life’s background noise and to realize what limited personal space the “micro” affords.

But there is a grace about the daily pulse.
