I flew back to Quito on Tuesday and returned to the Secret Garden hostel. As I was preparing to eat lunch alone, I stumbled upon a guy wearing a Carolina Track & Field shirt.
Elated, I told him I go to Carolina. He asked me what I was doing in Ecuador and I explained the internship. He then said, “Are you a Morehead?” I said, “Well, yeah.” His response? “I am too! My name’s Brock Baker.”
Completely stunned, we went to lunch together and ended up spending the remainder of the day touring Quito. He is traveling throughout Central and South America for about two months with a friend from the track/cross-country team, before he returns to begin medical school at Carolina this fall.
That night, two more Carolina students arrived at the Secret Garden hostel. One is doing a medical research project south of Quito and the other is about to begin the UNC Galapagos summer study abroad program.
Carolina never ceases to amaze me in its global reach.
