I am a huge advocate for direct service.

I really don’t believe you can be an advocate for a group if you haven’t listened to them and if you haven’t really participated in their realities.

Being that I’m a policy major, a lot of times we talk about the legislation or crafting the bill, but the participatory and the advocacy part is kind of left out—the importance of knowing the communities that your policies will affect.

So, I just think the best way to begin making any sort of difference is to start at the ground level in getting to know the people who are living the realities of the inequalities that you see.
